Music Marketing Blog Post #1

For the months of January and February, we are given the project of marketing a randomly selected song with a group of 3-4 people. In this blog post I will describe our planning process for our music marketing project.

My group and I were given several different rock songs and we decided to go with the song "My name is Human." After a week of researching different music distributing companies and the bands working with them, we started to plan out our own marketing plan and how our video should look like. The research helped us decided which ways our band would promote their song and taught us how rock bands get themselves out there.

Planning Process

To begin the planning, we need to figure out our overall theme and structure of our band. This was a rather simple process after listening to our song, we went with what we felt was right. The warm tones and space theme go with our name for the band.

After, we sorted through several names to try and select one that would fit perfectly for our new band. It was a difficult process as we wanted something that stood out but it wanted it to be something easy to pronounce and bring up in a conversation. We thought of naming our band Lisztomania, which means a need to listen to music all the time, or even Hiraeth, a homesickness for a home you cannot return. Although those names would have fit, it is something rather hard to say and we wanted it to be catchy. Since these words did not stick with us, we tried finding names from a different language or from greek gods. We tried Artemis, the goddess of wild nature, Espace, space in French, Parvos Per Collatio, meaning small by comparison in Latin, and more. After several names being thrown down in the denied box, we decided to go with Venus. Venus is a simple, catchy name that can not be forgotten and the meaning behind it fit well. Venus symbolizes passion, creativity, aesthetics, and being imaginative, it was a perfect fit for the name of our band.

After coming up with a name, we needed to figure out what were some ways we wanted to market our new song. Since our chosen target audience is teenagers and young adults, we decide to have our band create Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat pages. This way, our band would be able to promote their music and interact with fans. On Instagram, the band could go live and talk about their newest hit and the development of it to intrigue viewers. Also, on Snapchat, they could create their own filter with their music in the background. The marketing ideas are not final but we decided this was an interesting way to promote our band and song.

Finishing Touches

Now that we have the some of the basics down, we have many ideas that need to be thought out about our marketing and distributing. Not only this but the social medias/website pages need to be finished, we need to create our slogan, and finish planning the music video. Although we have several ideas for our social media pages for marketing and the design in mind for the website, we have not officially created those and that needs to be finished. We also wanted a catchy slogan that we could put on the bands merch. Lastly, our final next step should be to finish planning the video so we can start filming.
